Facial Implants can change facial disproportion into facial harmony. When a specific feature of the face is too small, Facial Augmentation can enhance and enlarge the area to better match the rest of the face. The Facial Augmentation Videos below feature the most commonly used facial implants: Cheek Implants (Malar Implants), Chin Implants and Nasal Implants (Dorsal Nasal Implants).

Why Choose Facial Augmentation?

There are two main indications for Facial Augmentation. The first is to balance a congenitally small facial feature like flat or weak chin or flat nasal bridge. The second is to correct the loss of facial fullness associated with injury or aging like flat cheeks or the loss of lip fullness. The most frequently requested Facial Augmentation Procedures are discussed below.

Cheek Augmentation (Malarplasty)

Malar Hypoplasia is when the cheeks do not develop proportionately and do not match the projection of the rest of the face. The result can be flat cheek bones that lack adequate width and/or projection. Facial Atrophy, the normal loss of facial fat that occurs as we age, further compounds this problem. The cheek's Malar Fat Pad gets smaller and often descends as we age.

Computer Imaging can simulate the results of Cheek Augmentation and preview what can be achieved with Cheek Augmentation before you have surgery. Cheek Fillers are a way to temporarily try-on cheek implants, and give you palpable idea of what stronger cheek bones look like on your face, without having to make the commitment. Many patients prefer maintaining their Cheek Augmentation with fillers, as the treatments can be performed quickly and in the office, without the need for surgery. Cheek Implants, on the other hand, are placed during a short surgical procedure, and provide a more permanent replacement for the missing cheek volume. Also called Malar Implants, Cheek Implants provide support for the lower eyelids, and are sometimes recommended along with Blepharoplasty for a more complete lower eyelid rejuvenation.

Chin Augmentation (Genioplasty)

Microgenia, or a small chin is something that we are all born with. As we age, our jaw grows and the chin achieves a more mature stature. A weak chin can make the rest of the face appear too big. This is especially true of the nose. When a normal-sized nose is paired with a small chin, the result is a nose that looks too big. It is important that the chin is examined whenever Rhinoplasty (nasal surgery) is considered. Sometimes, a Chin Implant alone is all that is needed to balance the nose and provide facial harmony.

Like Cheek Augmentation, Chin Augmentation can be simulated on a computer to see how much is enough. It provides a good lateral view of the chin, with and without augmentation, and allows for a thoughtful discussion of what is possible and what you are expecting. Chin Fillers can simulate Chin Augmentation on a trial basis, while Chin Implants can provide longer lasting results.

Nasal Augmentation (Rhinoplasty)

Sometimes the upper nose lacks projection, even when the tip is fully developed. This can be congenital (from birth), or can be the result of trauma. Nasal Augmentation can enhance the fullness and definition of the nose so that is matches the nasal tip. The most frequent Nasal Augmentation is enhancement of the nasal dorsum, the part of the nose that projects from between the eyes down to the nasal tip, and provides the contour seen when the nose is viewed on profile.

The nasal dorsum can be enhanced with a dermal filler like Restylane, Juvederm or Perlane, or more permanently with surgical intervention. Nasal Augmentation can be achieved with cartilage or bone grafts, or with a variety of Nasal Implants. Computer simulation can help guide the amount of augmentation desired, and can be done at the time of your consultation. Fillers provide a simple method of temporary Nasal Augmentation, and allow you to achieve an enhanced nasal profile without surgery, a so called Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty, on the other hand, can provide longer lasting results. A dorsal nasal graft or Nasal Implant can be inserted under the skin of the nose to provide support and structure to enhance your profile.

Lip Augmentation (Lip Fillers, Lip Surgery and Lip Implants)

While Lip Augmentation is by far the most common Facial Augmentation Procedure, Lip Implants have been all but abandoned with the introduction of HA based fillers. The most commonly used Lip Fillers are Restylane, Juvederm and Perlane. The downside is the temporary nature of fillers; however, the ease of use and ability to micro-augment specific features of the lips leads to superior results that are not possible with lip implants alone. Fillers are soft and move with the lips, while Lip Implants tend to be firm. Lip Implants claim to be permanent; however, Lip Implants can become exposed and require removal to prevent or treat an infection. Sometimes, longer lasting results can be obtained with Lip Augmentation Surgery.
