Non-Surgical Wrinkle Correction

Perhaps you have heard the expression, "When you have a hammer, the whole world looks like a nail." Plastic Surgeons like to use the tools and skills they acquire; mainly, because surgery actually works. Methods that profess “Near Surgical” almost always make us wonder what they are measuring with. However, there are exceptions to every good rule.

Non-surgical correction of facial wrinkles has come a long way in the last few decades. Injectables, like dermal fillers and botulinum toxin have revolutionized how we treat the face. For the first time, plastic surgeons have simple office procedures, which can treat more than superficial wrinkles, with minimal downtime.

Botulinum Toxin (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and other neuromodulators)

Botulinum Toxin is a wrinkle eraser. While is not as effective as Photoshop®, neuromodulators like Botox, Dysport and Xeomin prevent the facial muscles from folding the skin and causing lines. The area most commonly treated, and the only area FDA approved for wrinkle reduction with botulinum toxin is the glabella. The glabella is the small patch of skin between the eyebrows and above the nose that wrinkles when we frown, concentrate or squint.

A single treatment with botulinum toxin prevents the motion that causes the glabella to wrinkle, and allows the skin to heal and flatten. Prolonged correction requires periodic injections. It is much like having your haircut. If you like the way it looks, you know you will have to do it again. On the other hand, if you don't like the result, the effects will wear off too. Deeper lines many not completely smooth, and a Dermal Filler can be a good complement to the neuromodulator.

Dermal Fillers (Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane, Radiesse and other wrinkle fillers)

The Dermal Fillers are often confused with the neuromodulators. While both reduce facial wrinkles with a simple injection, they work in completely different ways. Neuromodulators (like Botox, Dysport and Xeomin) stop muscle motion, but do not provide any filler to smooth wrinkles. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, add volume to the skin and do not affect motion. Because of this, fillers are ideal for the area around the mouth, where motion needs to be preserved. Most current dermal fillers are made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a component of your skin. These include Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane and Boletero. Radiesse is made of calcium hydroxyapatite, found in your bones. It is more firm, used deeper than HA fillers and is better for augmentation of the cheeks bones and chin.
