Liposuction Before & After Pictures
Liposuction (Liposculpture) remains one of the most popular cosmetic plastic surgery procedures. It gained wide-spread acceptance as a safe and predictable means of selective fat removal, with the introduction of smaller Liposuction cannulas and the introduction of Tumescent Liposuction in the 1980s. It is a procedure that can be adapted to treat specific areas of disproportionate fat located in just about any area on your body. It is not an alternative to weight loss, but unlike weight loss, Liposuction can remove fat directly from the areas in which it is causing unwanted fullness.

A Guide To Liposuction Before And After Photos
Above is our gallery of our Liposuction Before and After Pictures. The before pictures are on the left, while the after pictures are on the right. All pictures are of actual patients who have had their plastic surgery by Dr. Joseph Mele, MD, FACS, at our San Francisco Bay Area plastic surgery center. While our Liposculpture Before and After Photos can serve as a guide to what is possible with cosmetic surgery, your individual results will vary. Seven areas of Liposuction Before and After Photos are reviewed below in more detail: Abdomen, Sides, Back, Thighs, Chin, Arms and Chest.
Liposuction of the Abdomen
Liposuction Before and Afters: The Abdomen - Disproportionate weight gain of the abdomen tends to fill the area below the umbilicus (belly button).
Before: Her lower abdomen has a disproportionate collection of fat. She is not overweight, so Liposuction is an option for spot removal of the fat from the lower abdomen.
After: Liposuction was performed as an outpatient procedure in about an hour. Two small incisions are made well below the belt line, and sometimes one is also made in the belly button. This provides hidden access, and the ability to criss-cross the suctioning for maximal fat removal and smooth contouring. The sides can also be addressed through the same incisions. If the skin is redundant and folding over on the lower belly, or the abdominal muscles are loose, a Tummy Tuck is the better option.
Liposuction of the Sides (Love Handles)
Liposuction Before and Afters: The Sides (Flanks) - The flanks, sides and love handles are common regions for Liposculpting.
Before: The patient is thin but has fullness just above her bikini line. When wearing jeans, the overstuffed love handles bulge over the beltline causing a muffin-top.
After: Liposuction can sculpt the sides and flatten the sides of the trunk, reducing any fullness above her jeans. This area can be approached from the front, back or both for more stubborn fat collections.
Liposuction of the Back (Muffin Top)
Liposuction Before and Afters: The Back - Men can get muffin-tops too.
Before: This patient is in great shape, but he has genetically programmed disproportionate fat collections on his lower back. They run in his family, and he was tired of them.
After: The fat has been liposuctioned using tumescent technique through a small incision hidden in the top of the mid gluteal fold. For more stubborn fat, additional incisions can be placed on either side below the beltline.
Liposuction of the Thighs (Saddle Bags)
Liposuction Before and Afters: The Thighs - Another common area treated with Liposuction is the thighs.
Before: Thigh fat tends to be disproportionate on the inner thigh, outer thigh (saddle bags) and upper posterior thigh (banana roll). This case demonstrates localized fat of the inner and outer thighs.
After: The fat on the inner and outer thigh was removed with Tumescent Liposuction. This gives the thighs better proportions and enhances the way pants, skirts and dresses fit. The incisions used for liposuctioning the lower abdomen can often also be used for thigh sculpting. Additional incisions can placed posteriorly to allow for criss-crossing. This further enhances the removal of stubborn saddle bag fat pockets.
Liposuction of the Chin and Neck
Liposuction Before and Afters: The Chin and Neck - The area below the chin and the upper neck is another area that can accumulate disproportionate fat. The results are dependent on the skin having enough elasticity to recoil. Loose neck skin cannot be treated with Liposuction and requires a Neck Lift.
Before: This patient has lost the definition between his chin and neck. He also has a collection of fat under the chin that further obscures the transition between the jawline and the neck.
After: The excess fat has been removed from the area beneath the chin. This unveils the contours of the neck and decreases the double chin. The more fat available for removal and the more acute the angle between the jawline and the neck, the more dramatic the results.
Liposuction of the Arms
Liposuction Before and Afters: The Arms - Arm Liposuction works well for firm arms that contain excess fat.
Before: Disproportionate fat is present along the lower border of the arm; however, the overlying skin is tight with good elasticity.
After: Excess fat was removed through small incisions at the elbow and in the axilla (arm pit). Fat can also be removed from the upper arm when present.
Liposuction of the Chest
Liposuction Before and Afters: The Chest - Liposuction of the chest can be used to reduce Gynecomastia in men.
Before: This patient was uncomfortable with the fullness behind his nipples and also had some stubborn fat on his abdomen. Liposuction is commonly used for Male Breast Reduction because the male breast skin tends to be tight. It is rarely used for female Breast Reduction because removing breast fat can increase sagging. For both men and women, firmer breast tissue requires direct excision.
After: The chest and abdominal contours are enhanced by removing disproportionate fat with Tumescent Liposuction. Although his weight has not changed significantly, he appears much thinner and more fit after the procedure.
Liposuction of the Hips
Liposuction Before and Afters: The Hips - Liposuction of the hips can reduce disproportionate fat on the hips and correct asymmetry due to asymmetrical fat.
Before: This patient was uncomfortable with the fullness and asymmetry of her hips. It showed in dresses and over jeans as a muffin top. Liposuction is commonly used for areas of disproportionate fat of the hips
After: The hip contours are slimmed and the asymmetry was corrected by liposculpting more fat off her left hip with Tumescent Liposuction. Like the patient above, she appears thinner and more fit after the procedure, but her weight might change a pound. Liposuction is not a weight reduction tool, but it can enhance body contours by selectively removing pockets of excess fat.
How Is Liposuction Done?
The most commonly used, safest and most predictable method of Liposuction is Tumescent Liposuction. This method involves injecting the area for Liposuction with a balanced salt solution containing a local anesthetic and epinephrine. The solution reduces bruising, blood loss and postoperative discomfort. A compression garment is usually worn for two weeks after the procedure day and night, though it can be removed to shower. The garment is then worn twelve hours a day for the next four weeks, or until the swelling has resolved.
